In response to Russia’s aggression and hostilities in Ukraine, Vilnius University (VU) offered the Ukrainian academic community and students assistance and the opportunity to continue their studies in Lithuania. VU offers free studies and financial support – the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Scholarship worth €300, as well as other financial and psychological assistance to students already studying here and transferring from Ukrainian universities to VU.

At present, VU dormitories already house over 70 Ukrainians, including 33 students who have already signed VU study contracts, and almost 300 more contracts are being prepared. One of the students who has already signed a study contract is Alina Kravchuk, a student at the Faculty of Law from Kharkiv who transferred to VU from Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University.

“We arrived in Vilnius on 27 March and will start studying at the Faculty of Law within a week. I arrived here with a coursemate of mine, we live together in a university dormitory, while my family stayed in Kharkiv. At the moment, it’s a relatively safe suburban area, there are no bombings. I will have an individual study plan, and I’m also considering taking English language courses. So far, we have been able to get acquainted with the university environment, the library,” she said.

Students from Ukrainian universities who continue their studies at VU are exempt from tuition fees, can apply for other types of financial support, stay in VU dormitories free of charge and, if necessary, attend free English language courses based on the level of English required for their studies. Current students who have started their studies at VU earlier can also apply for various assistance.

VU organises and actively participates in other support initiatives for Ukraine. The University collects material support, volunteers in various fields, and provides psychological assistance.
